Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming and subject to the Kyoto Protocol. Carbon emissions from deforestation, the burning of fossil fuels, changes in land use, and other human activities are increasing, while the earth's ability to soak up, or "fix" the carbon, is decreasing because of ocean and forest changes.
Reforestation is a way to help restore the balance. Planting trees, especially quick-growing native trees that will not be logged or burned, removes carbon from the cycle and sequesters, or "fixes" it within the wood itself.
Purchase of this Gift That Gives More™ plants 30 native trees in the Monarch Reserve in Mexico. These fast-growing, tall, thick trees, will sequester 1/3 metric ton of carbon each (at a conservative estimate). After progressive thinning, half the trees will remain, sequestering 5 metric tons of carbon and removing it from the atmosphere for as long as the trees stand.
The types of trees are chosen based on the individual site's requirements, and are drawn from: Pinus pseudostrobus ("Pseudostrobus Pine"), Pinus greggii ("Greggii Pine"), Pinus michoacana ("Michoacan Pine"), Cupressus lindleyii ("White Cedar"), and Abies religiosa (Oyamel Fir").
La Cruz Habitat Protection Project, Inc. (LCHPP) is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and managing forests in Michoacán, México and beyond. LCHPP works closely with its partner LCHPP-Mexico, which has accomplished the planting of 4.5 million trees through 2009 in and around the Monarch Biosphere Reserve and its buffer zone in the Mexican state of Michoacán. LCHPP is dedicated to forest restoration and promoting sustainable forest management in Central México to benefit the people and other creatures that depend on the forests, as well to assure a healthy planet for future generations.
