5 Ways to Celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this October
October is the American Humane Society’s National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Established in October of 1981, this annual month-long campaign is used to encourage the public to save a dog’s life by adopting one from a local shelter or rescue group. There has never been a better time to get out and adopt a four-legged friend into your family!
We have previously shared several reasons to adopt a dog. However, if you unable to adopt a dog, there are still plenty of things you can do to support this cause. Here are 5 ways to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this October.
1. Spay or Neuter your dog.
If you are unable to adopt a dog because you already have one (or more), make sure you have your pet spayed or neutered. This prevents the possibility of unexpected puppies that you may be unable to care for. It has also been shown that spaying and neutering results in longer, healthier lives, with fewer behavior problems for the animals.
Take it a step further by donating toward the cost of spaying and neutering a dog. With more than 3 million pets euthanized in the United States each year, it is important to ensure that every dog is a loved and wanted dog. Click here give dogs and puppies in shelters the best possible chance of adoption by funding a spaying or neutering procedure.
2. Volunteer at a local shelter.
Animal shelters are typically funded by donations and grants. Resources are often limited and they rely on volunteers and donations in order to operate. Help your local shelter by giving your time and talents.
3. Provide a foster home for a dog.
You may not be able to give a forever home to a dog, but you may be able to provide temporary housing through fostering. By fostering a dog, you free up valuable space and resources at your local shelter, allowing them to care for more orphaned animals. Contact a nearby animal rescue to find out how you can get started today.
4. Encourage others to adopt a dog.
Through the use of social media, you can influence your friends and family to adopt a dog. Let everyone know that October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by sharing this post and giving them ideas on how they can help.
5. Support a campaign on The Animal Rescue Site.
There are plenty of Gifts That Gives More™ supporting initiatives to help shelter dogs listed on The Animal Rescue Site. For example, you could contribute towards meals for animals, life-saving vaccinations, or transportation to another shelter to increase chances of adoption. Adopting a shelter dog can bring so many benefits to your life. This October, consider choosing one of the millions of animals waiting for their forever home to join your family.
