GreaterGood.org and Feeding South Dakota Team Up to Help Kids
At GreaterGood.org, hunger and education are two of the pieces that make up the cornerstone of who we are as an organization. We believe that alleviating hunger, and supporting education are vital to change the world. That’s why when Feeding South Dakota of Pierre, South Dakota asked us to partner with them, we jumped at the opportunity!
Feeding South Dakota, whose mission is to eliminate hunger in South Dakota, is the state’s largest charitable hunger relief organization with distribution centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City. In 2015, they distributed over 12.3 million pounds of quality nutritious donated and purchased food providing 10.2 million meals to more than 100,000 individuals in need.
When Feeding South Dakota launched their BackPack program, which helped supply backpacks to children in need, GreaterGood.org saw a perfect opportunity to make an impact in the lives of children all over South Dakota in an exciting way.
” Most of our clients are in some kind of crisis when they enter into our office. It is a satisfactory feeling to have a family come to our offices and be able to ease the anxiety of the children with a book. The adults who come in to receive help, while waiting are able to read to their child or better yet the child reads to the adult. It is just a moment in time, BUT when they leave the office and have their own book in hand to take home with them it is a win-win situation” Laura White, executive director.
Through donations from our partners, Coughlan Companies Community Fund, we were able to donate over 13,000 books directly into the hands (or backpacks) of kids in an effort to nurture a love of reading and learning at an early age. Buy supplying the books that would fill the backpacks of these kids, we ensured that each and every child had a book or two to call their very own, a necessary step in developing a love of reading.
