Thanks to YOU K9 Officers to Receive Ballistic Vests and Heat Alarms

By Denise Bash, Director of Special Projects

K9 who received a vest from a previous award.

Today is a great day! Thanks to YOUR support, we awarded a grant to Spike’s K9 Fund to help equip 11 police K9s with K9 ballistic vests, and 6 police K9 unit vehicles with K9 heat alarm systems. Earlier this spring, we awarded funding to Spike’s K9 Fund to outfit 16 K9 officers for ballistic vests, which they utilized almost immediately. The need is great, and it is an honor to help in any way possible!

A K9 officer’s need for ballistic vest protection is certainly well understood, but did you know that an alarming amount of officers are injured or killed by heat exhaustion? These injuries commonly take place in police K9 unit vehicles, usually due to mechanical failure.

K9 Officer Fritz will soon have his vest!

Since many police budgets are slim, extra equipment for officers both human or canine can be tough to find. As a result, our partners at Spike’s K9 Fund requested help to outfit K9 units with heat alarms. The heat alarm monitors vital components including temperature sensors and vehicle battery voltage. It will sound when the vehicle reaches an unsafe temperature, and doors can open with a key fob, so the K9 officer’s partner can release them remotely in an emergency, if needed. K9 Officers like Fritz from Huntington PD in West Virginia are now receiving alarms!
