Children Discover the Joys of Reading
Children’s book ownership is imperative to developing reading readiness, supporting literacy growth throughout primary years, becoming a skilled reader, and developing a deep appreciation for books. While in middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low- income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
Reading is the most important skill a child needs to contribute and function competently within our society.
This year, thanks to your donations, GreaterGood.org was able to help Bernie’s Book Bank share the joy of reading with hundreds of Illinois schoolchildren.
Bernie’s Book Bank offers an innovative approach to empower at-risk children to read their way to a better life by delivering 6 books twice a year directly to children in need. These books then go into the homes of these children facilitating access to books for their siblings, neighbors, and friends alike.
Donors like you make this possible. Thank you!
