Fighting Famine in Uganda with the Potato Vine

Despite Uganda producing more food than it consumes, Ugandans’ access to nutritious food is significantly limited due to poverty and a rapidly-growing population. In fact, nearly half of all Ugandans consume fewer calories than they need every day with one in three schoolchildren having no food to eat during the school day. With your help, Greater Good Charities was able to partner with the Reach Out Nkokonjeru Parish HIV/AIDS Initiative (RONHAI) to help farmers in Uganda plant sweet potato vines.

Feed Thy Neighbor: Banco de Alimentos de Puerto Rico

Greater Good Charities, The Hunger Site, 12 Tomatoes and renowned actor, Chris Pratt, partnered together last December to help fight the increase in hunger caused by the economic implications of the coronavirus. Their Feed Thy Neighbor campaign launched in mid-December, with Mr. Pratt hosting a New Year’s Eve event where he invited friends and colleagues to bring attention to the cause.

Helping Children Entering Foster Care

According to the most recent federal data, more than 400,000 children are currently in foster care in the United States. When children first enter the foster care system, they are only given a garbage bag to keep their belongings in. With the help of our generous donors, Greater Good Charities is partnering with Together We Rise to join the Sweet Case program. This program aims to replace those plastic, disposable bags with a custom-made and durable duffel bag.

Caring for the Vulnerable During COVID-19

As COVID-19 rages on in the United States, Greater Good Charities is working with partners all around the country to protect our most vulnerable populations. While we do not know the full effects of COVID-19, we know that by providing hand sanitizer to people experiencing homelessness and people living in interim housing sites that make social distancing difficult, we are significantly reducing the spread of COVID-19 among this vulnerable population.

Good Packs: Support for People and Pets Experiencing Homelessness

Today, I am visiting an LAFH housing site where a hotel provides shelter to 180 individuals, and more than 40 pets. Together, we will distribute or deliver 300 Greater Good Charities’ Good Packs — backpacks filled with essential supplies including basic hygiene items, a blanket, reusable water bottle and standard-size T-shirt to people currently without a home of their own. For those with dogs, thanks to iHeartDogs.com, we also have Pet Packs that include a leash, a dish, dog food and treats, and a toy.
