Hurricane Francine left a path of destruction in Louisiana, with high winds, knocking out power, and putting millions under flood warnings. Unfortunately, numerous pets have been separated from their owners or left behind in the chaos. Local animal shelters, already grappling with power outages and potential flooding themselves are being pushed to their limits.
“Calls, messages, and emails have been absolutely non-stop. There are lots of loose animals, fences down. There has been a lot of feeding in place, hoping that these animals will be able to return to their homes. But unfortunately, many of them will end up in the shelter,” said Michelle Brignack, Director of Jefferson Protection and Animal Welfare Services.
In response to the crisis, the Greater Good Charities team sprang into action over the weekend, launching an emergency transport mission. More than 85 adoptable pets that were already in Louisiana shelters before the storm, boarded a plane and were flown to Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where shelters with the capacity to care for them met them. This effort creates space for newly displaced cats and dogs until they can be reunited with their families.
Camella, Tundra, and Dina were among the pets transported:
