July 19–25, 2026 | 10th Annual National Feed a Rescue Pet Week | Goal: 3 Million Meals
One of the biggest expenses for shelters and rescue groups is feeding animals in their care. Of the 5.8 million animals that entered shelters last year, 1.6 million remained there, hungry and waiting for adoption. With more and more bellies to fill and the costs of food and other basic pet supplies rising, many rescues are left with little to nothing in their budgets for medical treatment, vaccines, or adoption programs.
Greater Good Charities works to fill this gap by shipping donated food to rescue groups across the country through the only national pet food banking system in the U.S. We make sure shelter animals are fed, and shelters have extra money in their budgets to help dogs and cats in desperate need.
Over the last nine years of National Feed a Rescue Pet Week, your donations have provided over 33.8 million meals for animals awaiting their forever homes.
When one-year-old Haven was found abandoned outside a shipping facility, she weighed just 25 pounds and was too weak to stand. Veterinarians at an emergency hospital worked to stabilize her, but it was clear that after prolonged starvation, Haven’s condition was critical and her survival uncertain. Thanks to around-the-clock care, Haven slowly began to heal, and a carefully managed feeding plan with prescription food provided by Greater Good Charities set her firmly on the road to recovery.
Today, Haven has fully overcome the life-threatening effects of starvation and neglect. She’s transformed into a playful, loving, thriving dog—a true testament to the power of second chances.
When shelter staff conducted a rescue for a puppy named Gru, they found Minion. Tiny and nearly hairless, suffering from severe mange, multiple tick-borne diseases, and life-threatening infections, Minion’s recovery took months. But with the help of nutritious food provided by Greater Good Charities, Minion got the care she needed to heal. Today, she's healthy, full of personality, and happily ruling every room she enters.
After suffering a fall that broke her jaw, sweet Moss needed multiple surgeries and intensive long-term care to heal. These unexpected medical costs placed a tremendous strain on her rescue's resources, but thanks to food donations from Greater Good Charities, they didn’t have to worry. They could focus on giving Moss the best care possible while resting assured that the nearly 100 cats in their care would always have full bellies. Today, Moss is healthy, happy, and ready for a forever home!
Donations of pet food do more than fill bowls—they give vulnerable animals the chance to recover, thrive, and find the future they deserve.
