Overnight on December 10 and 11th, 2021, at least 30 tornadoes struck 6 states: Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee. At least 70 people have died in Kentucky alone, with dozens more deaths across other affected states. Many other people lost their homes, and pets are displaced. People and pets urgently need our help now.

We are already responding, fielding requests from partners on the ground. We are planning emergency transports to move pets in shelters, sending in shipments of needed supplies, and standing ready to issue emergency cash grants to affected partners and first responders. But we can’t do it without your support.

Your donation will fund these desperately needed emergency relief efforts, providing cash grants, medication, food, and more to vulnerable people and pets who need it most. Rush your donation now to help victims of this unprecedented winter disaster.

Hurricane Ida hit the southern Louisiana coast as a massive Category 4 storm Sunday morning, bringing sustained winds over 150 mph, life-threatening storm surge, and widespread flooding. The region’s power grid was ravaged, leaving over one million residents in the dark with no clear timeline as to when power will return. These communities now face the dangerous prospect of weeks without power in stifling, late-summer heat.

Greater Good Charities is already responding. We have moved over 400 shelter pets out of harm's way. We're sending in medications, Good Packs full of survival supplies, and other critically needed items to our animal shelter and human services partners. We stand ready to send in additional support.

Update:

Having a cache of essential supplies is pivotal to being prepared for the next disaster.

We heard from our partners at Louisiana SPCA in New Orleans that the supplies we sent them in June, including slip leads and flea collars, pet beds and blankets, bandaging tape, and “cones”, made a huge impact in the wake of Hurricane Ida.

"As we learned from Hurricane Laura and other previous disasters, the impacts of hurricanes are felt for much longer than the actual storm and the continuing effects of the COVID-19 crisis on our region will make this even more difficult. This grant has allowed us to focus our energy and funding on providing care for animals instead of the supplies we have to provide..."

Louisiana SPCA also has multiple trucks of food and supplies coming their way! This includes 90 pallets of litter, 38 pallets of mixed cat/dog food from Royal Canin, 10 pallets of dog food from HALO Purely for Pets, and animal care supplies such as including flea and tick, pet blankets, enrichment and kitten formula, and collars. Waggin Water is also shipping bottled drinking water for distribution to displaced people and pets in the area.

Update:

With the help of our amazing partners at Mars Petcare and Pedigree Foundation, today our Good Flights crew airlifted approximately 50 at-risk shelter cats and dogs from Louisiana to find new adopting homes in Oregon. The pets received by the animal shelters will be evaluated and receive any follow-up medical care needed before being put up for adoption.

This flight brings our total of at-risk shelter pets transported out of the danger of Hurricane Ida to over 500!

Update:

We’ve increased the number of Rescue Bank pet food and supply trucks heading to the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) to four! These trucks will contain 38 pallets of dry dog Pedigree food, 31 pallets of dry dog and cat food, 26 pallets of pet food and litter, and plenty of food and supplies thanks to PetSmart.

We’re sending Acadiana Animal Aid a $5,000 cash grant for Hurricane Ida response. This is to be used to set up a regional Hurricane Ida response hub, to rent equipment for moving pet food and shelter supplies (such as a forklift), and to assist on emergency pet transport. The remainder will be used to cover veterinary and sheltering expenses related to intaking animals displaced from Hurricane Ida.

As flooding continues in Tennessee, animal welfare groups continue to be in dire straits. To help Nashville Humane Association through, we’re sending them a Chewy truck filled with mixed pet food and assorted shelter supplies, and pet hard goods!

Waverly Animal Shelter of Waverly, TN will receive a grant for critical veterinary supply to allow the shelter to test for the presence of heartworm. We're also working on providing some enrichment shelter supplies for this group. Stay tuned!

Update:

Today we loaded up a truck full of pet food from our Florida Rescue Bank Ambassador, transported it to our Good Flights plane, and flew it to animal welfare groups in Louisiana. The hurricane and its fallout have left local shelters in desperate need of basic necessities like food.

Update:

This morning, we took to the skies again with another Good Flight transporting nearly 90 pets out of areas affected by Hurricane Ida. The pets were flown to shelters in Florida, where they will be cared for and be prepped for adoption. With this most recent airlift, Greater Good Charities has moved nearly 400 pets out of the Gulf Coast to safety, freeing valuable shelter space.

Dr. Matthew Wilson from Elanco pharmaceutical company personally drove vaccines and flea and tick for cats and dogs to St Martin Parish Animal Animal Shelter because of difficulties in getting products delivered safely due to the hurricane.

Update:

The Greater Good Charities Disaster Response team is working closely with the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART), the lead agency in charge of coordinating the disaster response efforts in the state. LSART requested our help to fulfill an emergency water delivery to go into various parishes and out to families in the hardest-hit areas as well as other parishes where evacuated families are currently staying. We were able to fill this urgent request with an out-of-state company that delivered a truckload of water (5-gallon jugs and individual bottles) within 36 hours. **Potable/fresh drinking water is an ongoing critical supply need after a disaster like this.**

Greater Good Charities and Hill's Pet Nutrition flew in 10,000 dog and cat meals to Louisiana to provide much-needed nutritional support to pets impacted by the hurricane. There's especially a need for wet cat food, so this delivery is making huge immediate impact. This is likely just the first of a series of deliveries.

Companion Animal Alliance is our on-the-ground partner in Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge. They will act as veterinary supply and veterinary supply hub serving the area that includes the most populous parish in the state. To start, a cash grant is being awarded so that they can purchase a new refrigerator to keep vaccines safe and animal care supplies from going bad. [Grant Amount: $5,000.00]
CATNIP Foundation at Big Sky Ranch

Located in Folsom, Louisiana they’ve been awarded a grant of goods consisting 43 pallets of dry dog food, dry cat food, and dog treats. This truck is scheduled to arrive on 09/06. We will also be sending enrichment and animal care supplies including stainless steel dog bowls, slip leads, and kitten formula in a separate shipment. With these resources on the way, the CATNIP Foundation will serve as the pet food supply hub for community requests as well as shelter and rescue requests in the St. Tammany Parish and vicinity. Good Flight landing tomorrow but later than originally scheduled because of delayed pilots. Cats and dogs are ready to go. Louisiana airport is not yet open, but tomorrow cats and dogs from St. John Parish, Terrebonne Parish, LaFourche Parish, St. Charles Parish (heavily affected parishes) will fly out.

In partnership with The Humane Society of Broward County, we flew approximately 40 shelter dogs and cats out of the Gulf Coast states to South Florida. These sweet shelter pets are safe, rested, and ready for adoption!

Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) received a grant of pet enrichment items like cat castles, catnip toys, cat scratchers, and dog toys. Hurricane Ida made landfall as a category 4 storm.

A million people are without power and won’t be without it for days or possibly weeks as Hurricane Ida made landfall as the second most damaging storm that ever hit the state of Louisiana. We have started awarding grants and are in regular communication with our partners on the ground to assess their communities’ most immediate needs and how to get help in as soon as possible considering the extent of damages to infrastructure.

Aiding in their active humanitarian response across all parishes impacted by the hurricane, we've shipped 300 Good Packs and 300 SOS Pouches. They will be distributing packs and pouches to families severely affected by this powerful storm. [Grant Value: $13,137]
Acadiana Animal Aid

A key partner in our disaster relief efforts, Acadiana is one of our supply hubs in the region serving areas affected by Hurricane Ida. They are also assisting us with our pet transports through Good Flights. Through our Rescue Bank program, we are sending 26 pallets of mixed pet food and cat litter. We are also awarding them 600 Good Packs, 300 Pup Pouches, 300 Purr Pouches, and 600 SOS Pouches. [Grant Value: tbd]

Update:

This is Athena, one of the lucky ones who escaped Hurricane Ida's wrath arrived in sunny San Diego

Our shelter partners on the ground had already been working throughout the night to evacuate pets in Louisiana to get ahead of Hurricane Ida’s arrival projected to make landfall tomorrow. Our Good Flights team transported 40 cats and 20 dogs out of harm’s way and landed in sunny San Diego. By transporting these shelter pets prior to the storm, we not only ensure they are adopted, but we are clearing space for incoming displaced pets.

Update:

We sent an emergency cash grant of $20,000 to All Hands and Hearts, a disaster-relief organization that will help those affected by the tornado safely return to their homes. This grant will allow the organization to send a team to help search and salvage belongings left in and around homes, perform necessary chainsaw work to clear damage, and safeguard personal belongings for future inclement weather impacts in the region in the coming days.
We sent Halfway Home Animal Rescue from Illinois a cash grant of $5,000 to help cover transport costs of receiving displaced pets. This will also help cover veterinary funding as some of the pets they received are in need of extreme veterinary needs.

We sent emergency cash grants to help the following organizations transport pets displaced by the tornado damage.

Grants Awarded:

We sent Mayfield Graves County Humane Society in Kentucky an emergency cash grant of $10,000 to help transport pets to safety. With so many people without power in the area, we also sheltered supplies, Good Packs, and SOS packs which the Humane Society distributes at their warming stations.
Thanks to our partners Datamars, we also sent two microchip readers and 100 microchips, which will help to connect displaced pets with their families.
Thanks to a donation from CharityUSA, Mayfield Graves County Humane Society also received $40,580 worth of amazing and essential feeding supplies, grooming products, and toys for the pets in their care!
Thanks to a donation from IDEXX we provided Mayfield Graves County Humane Society $10,800 of SNAP tests, which are vital to providing adequate pet care.
With Kentucky being home to so many horses, we sent a grant of $5,000 to Fleet of Angels in Colorado. This organization helps individual equine owners to feed and care for their horses. This cash grant will help Fleet of Angels aid the people and horses that have been displaced due to the storm.
We sent Nashville Humane Association in Tennessee an emergency cash grant for $9,600 to help with transporting displaced pets. This allowed them to take in transported pets and supply veterinary coverage.
We also sent Rutherford County PAWS in Tennessee a $700 emergency grant to help transport seven cats from Mayfield to Tennessee.
Kentucky Humane Society received $22,131 worth of essential feeding supplies, grooming products, and toys for the pets in their care.

On Sunday, September 18th, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico, nearly 5 years after Hurricane Maria destroyed the island’s infrastructure. The fragile electrical system went down, leaving millions without power and many without water. The United States government has declared a state of emergency, and people and pets need your help.

Hurricane Ian is now a major Category 4 storm – nearly a Category 5 – and has made its initial landfall on the Florida coast. With sustained winds of up to 155 mph, this storm is expected to bring life-threatening storm surges and massive flooding to at least 6 major cities across the state, making it one of the most powerful storms in decades. Thousands of people have already lost power.

On Sunday, September 18th, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in Puerto Rico, nearly 5 years after Hurricane Maria destroyed the island’s infrastructure. The fragile electrical system went down in one of the largest blackouts in US history, leaving millions without power and many without water. At least 5 people were killed by the storm, and most of the island is still without power or running water today. Major flooding is causing greater destruction after the devastation of sustained winds of almost 125 mph and over two feet of rainfall. The United States government has declared a state of emergency, and people and pets need your help.

Your donations are making a huge impact on animal shelters and the pets in their care as they continue to struggle in the wake of the floods that destroyed homes and property and killed at least two people late last month. As the flooding forced many families to make hard choices, many shelters have a significant influx of pets in their care. Thanks to your support, we sent Gateway Pet Guardians, an animal welfare organization in St. Louis, desperately needed vaccinations (thank you Boehringer Ingelheim!) and other veterinary supplies to accommodate this influx of animals. These will help the shelter keep the pets safe and healthy while they await their forever homes!

But it’s not just shelters that are struggling in the wake of the floods. In St. Louis, there are thousands of people and pets in dire need of resources to get through this time of crisis. That’s why Gateway participated in a Flood Relief Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) event and distributed over 100 Good packs filled with comfort and survival supplies. Not only that, but they also distributed over 1,500 LBS of dog food and over 50 vouchers for pet food and supplies to affected community members! This kind of on-the-ground relief is only possible because of YOU!

As the death toll continues to rise, Greater Good Charities is actively responding to help people and pets displaced by the fatal flooding in Kentucky and Southwest Virginia.

Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter is currently acting as a hub for pharmaceutical and pet food deliveries and distribution.

The Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter is working with deployed disaster experts. Greater Good Charities is supporting movement and logistics of critical supplies into the shelter so they can be utilized for this response. Today our program Good Flights airlifted more than 95 at-risk shelter dogs and cats from Louisiana to new adoptive homes in the pacific northwest. This flight opens several new partners in the Pacific Northwest including SpokAnimal, NOAH, Happy Tails Happy Homes, Motley Zoo Animal Rescue, Animal Protection Society- Friday Harbor, Alternative Humane Society.

Update:

We’ve increased the number of Rescue Bank pet food and supply trucks heading to the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) to four! These trucks will contain 38 pallets of dry dog Pedigree food, 31 pallets of dry dog and cat food, 26 pallets of pet food and litter, and plenty of food and supplies thanks to PetSmart.

We’re sending Acadiana Animal Aid a $10,000 cash grant - half for Hurricane Ida response and half to help with a COVID-19 staffing crisis in the shelter. Half will be used for a regional Hurricane Ida response hub to rent equipment for moving pet food and shelter supplies (such as a forklift) and to assist on emergency pet transport. The remainder will be used to cover veterinary and sheltering expenses related to intaking animals displaced from Hurricane Ida.

As flooding continues in Tennessee, animal welfare groups continue to be in dire straits. To help Nashville Humane Association through, we’re sending them a Chewy truck filled with mixed pet food and assorted shelter supplies, and pet hard goods!

Waverly Animal Shelter of Waverly, TN will receive a grant for critical veterinary supply to allow the shelter to test for the presence of heartworm. We're also working on providing some enrichment shelter supplies for this group. Stay tuned!

Update:

Today we loaded up a truck full of pet food from our Florida Rescue Bank Affiliate, transported it to our Good Flights plane, and flew it to animal welfare groups in Louisiana. The hurricane and its fallout have left local shelters in desperate need of basic necessities like food.

Update:

This morning, we took to the skies again with another Good Flight transporting nearly 90 pets out of areas affected by Hurricane Ida. The pets were flown to shelters in Florida, where they will be cared for and be prepped for adoption. With this most recent airlift, Greater Good Charities has moved nearly 400 pets out of the Gulf Coast to safety, freeing valuable shelter space.

Operation Sunflower:

A Good Flight dubbed Operation Sunflower took off from Louisiana with 90 shelter dogs and cats and landed in our CEO’s hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The receiving shelters are new to our network of partners, and we are so grateful for them for opening their doors and hearts. Greater Good Charities and Hill's Pet Nutrition flew in 10,000 dog and cat meals to Louisiana to provide much-needed nutritional support to pets impacted by the hurricane. There's especially a need for wet cat food, so this delivery is making a huge immediate impact and this is likely just the first of a series of deliveries.

Companion Animal Alliance is our on-the-ground partner in Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge. They will act as a veterinary supply and veterinary supply hub serving the area that includes the most populous parish in the state. To start, a cash grant is being awarded so that they can purchase a new refrigerator to keep vaccines safe and animal care supplies from going bad. [Grant Amount: $5,000.00]

CATNIP Foundation at Big Sky Ranch
Located in Folsom, Louisiana they’ve been awarded a grant of goods consisting 43 pallets of dry dog food, dry cat food, and dog treats. This truck is scheduled to arrive on 09/06. We will also be sending enrichment and animal care supplies including stainless steel dog bowls, slip leads, and kitten formula in a separate shipment. With these resources on the way, the CATNIP Foundation will serve as the pet food supply hub for community requests as well as shelter and rescue requests in the St. Tammany Parish and vicinity. A key partner in our disaster relief efforts, Acadiana is one of our supply hubs in the region serving areas affected by Hurricane Ida. They are also assisting us with our pet transports through Good Flights. Through our Rescue Bank program, we are sending 26 pallets of mixed pet food and cat litter. We are also awarding them 600 Good Packs, 300 Pup Pouches, 300 Purr Pouches, and 600 SOS Pouches.

Update:

We awarded the California Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps (CAVMRC), which provides free veterinary services to animals in emergency shelters during declared disaster responses for the entire state of California, a $10,000 cash grant.

This grant will provide logistical support to CAVMRC’s deployment: covering field officers hotel room, gas, and replenishment supplies used from emergency medical supply cache, other expenses such as reimbursement to responders for medications they brought, and money for new equipment such as vests and other deployment supplies that get ruined with use.

Update:

Great news! Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley has already distributed the 300 Good Packs, 200 Pup Pouches, 25 Purr Pouches, and 100 SOS Pouches they received! That means tons of people and pets evacuating their homes due to the rampant wildfires will have their most basic and essential needs met.

We're sending a Chewy truck full of pet food and supplies to Butte County Humane Society in Chico, CA. The BCHS will act as a hub for us during these wildfires, helping to distribute to the broader affected community.

We sent pharmacy animal care, food, and Good Packs to our partners at Sonoma Cart in Santa Rosa, CA. They are continuing to help their local animal shelter, Plumas Animal Services, through the challenges of the Dixie Fires.

In addition to the earlier cash grant, Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley, our partner on the ground since the Camp Fire in 2018, received 300 Good Packs, 200 Pup Pouches, 25 Purr Pouches, and 100 SOS Pouches as well as a large shipment of toys donated by CharityUSA. [Grant Value: $21,216.98]

Here's situational report from our partner:

"The Dixie Fire is currently up to 731,310 acres with only 40% containment. This fire began in Butte County and moved up into the mountains of Plumas and Lassen counties. It is now the 2nd largest wildfire in California history and will continue to grow until we are able to gain greater containment. Earlier in this disaster, there was a declaration of disaster, but with many towns being lost to this fire we just got the news that the governor is requesting a federal declaration that will bring resources to individuals impacted by this event. We are hoping this declaration will be approved by the president as soon as possible so that people will be helped. Currently, many folks have nowhere to go and no resources and many are sleeping in tents or their vehicles at night.

Our organization has had a small part in helping to stand up a Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) in the Plumas County area. We are supporting non-profits, churches, and local organizations in the area to understand what to do next. Support with knowledge and mentor however needed. One of our case managers has family in the area and lived in the area for 10 years and has been instrumental at bringing people together to connect and respond. In addition, our case management team has traveled to Quincy on two separate occasions to help with the distribution of necessary goods. We will continue to support in whatever ways that we can while still continuing to serve those impacted by the Camp and North Complex Fires as well.”

Update:

We’ve received a request for assistance from the Sonoma Community Animal Response Team (CART), one of our on-the-ground partners in the state of California since the Kincaid Fire in 2019. Sonoma CART was requested by Plumas County and has been deployed to provide mutual aid to Plumas County Animal Services. The animal services staff in Plumas County consists of only 2 animal control officers.

Sonoma CART’s team of volunteers is providing animal care, cleaning, feeding, and veterinary care for all animals at the small animal shelter. They are also providing feeding, cleaning, and medical care for all animals at the large animal shelter which has been set up at the fairgrounds in Quincy. Their trained evacuation teams are providing evacuation of animals of all species from the evacuation and burn zones. These teams answer calls for urgent evacuation needs and also tend to properties where animals have been stranded and need food and water. We have approximately 60 animals that we are tending to at the small animal shelter, 100 at the large animal shelter, and we spend 8 - 20+ hours per day in the field.

We are sending Sonoma CART animal care supplies to help with their fire disaster response including Elanco vaccines, 449 Good Packs, and 100 SOS Pouches, Purina pet food and litter, and animal care supplies including formula for kittens, blankets, and pet enrichment items. Update:

Greater Good Charities is fielding and responding to requests for help from community partners in the state of California. Right now there’s a need for children’s clothes, coats, long sleeves and pants, and shoes. There were hardly any items for children.

Many evacuees have expressed not having the transportation to get to the areas assisting those impacted. There’s clearly a need for a shuttle system or transportation solution to help evacuees get to assistance centers, distributions, shelters, etc. In addition, many people have expressed not wanting to leave their communities and wanting to stay and just “camp” at this time. So there is a need for tents, sleeping bags and pads, pillows, tarps, etc.

We sent Halfway Home Animal Rescue from Illinois a cash grant of $5,000 to help cover transport costs of receiving displaced pets. This will also help cover veterinary funding as some of the pets they received are in need of extreme veterinary needs.

We sent emergency cash grants to help the following organizations transport pets displaced by the tornado damage.

Grants Awarded:

We sent Mayfield Graves County Humane Society in Kentucky an emergency cash grant of $10,000 to help transport pets to safety. With so many people without power in the area, we also sheltered supplies, Good Packs, and SOS packs which the Humane Society distributes at their warming stations.
Thanks to our partners Datamars, we also sent two microchip readers and 100 microchips, which will help to connect displaced pets with their families.
Thanks to a donation from CharityUSA, Mayfield Graves County Humane Society also received $40,580 worth of amazing and essential feeding supplies, grooming products, and toys for the pets in their care!
Thanks to a donation from IDEXX we provided Mayfield Graves County Humane Society $10,800 of SNAP tests, which are vital to providing adequate pet care.
With Kentucky being home to so many horses, we sent a grant of $5,000 to Fleet of Angels in Colorado. This organization helps individual equine owners to feed and care for their horses. This cash grant will help Fleet of Angels aid the people and horses that have been displaced due to the storm.
We sent Nashville Humane Association in Tennessee an emergency cash grant for $9,600 to help with transporting displaced pets. This allowed them to take in transported pets and supply veterinary coverage.
We also sent Rutherford County PAWS in Tennessee a $700 emergency grant to help transport seven cats from Mayfield to Tennessee.

Kentucky Humane Society received $22,131 worth of essential feeding supplies, grooming products, and toys for the pets in their care.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Haiti at 8:30 am on August 14, 2021. The epicenter was recorded around 12km northeast of Saint Louis-du-Sud, about 125km west of the capital Port-au-Prince. As of August 18th, Haiti’s Civil Protection reports over 2,189 deaths and over 12,268 injured, more than 52,935 collapsed buildings, including hospitals and schools, at least 77,006 damaged buildings, 137,000 families affected, and significant damages to roads and vital infrastructures, including 25 health infrastructures. Where COVID-19 is still very much present, which adds to the severity and complexity of the current situation.

Greater Good Charities is currently coordinating the delivery of critical relief supplies into areas devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. The rollout of relief has been encumbered by unsafe travel conditions, but we are communicating and collaborating with our local partners daily on how to get help to the affected communities as quickly as possible.

Food continues to be a stressful challenge for those left in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. We awarded KORE Foundation a $20,000 cash grant for purchasing and distributing food around Les Cayes.

Update:

We are working on coordinating an effort through our partner, KORE Foundation, to provide a secure supply distribution of donations to the most vulnerable areas of southeast Haiti, the epicenter of the earthquake. These are donations of relief goods through Greater Good Charities as well as other non-profits. Due to increased crime and theft throughout the country, security and strategy is key to getting supplies to where they are needed most. We have heard reports that disaster response supplies from others are getting stolen in transit, leaving some areas completely without any type of support or relief. We are working carefully to be sure our goods and helps make it through as intended.

In addition, we have also secured the following donations:

5,000 pairs of shoes, 1,500 pairs of socks, and 1,000 reusable face masks. These are set to arrive in Haiti in the next couple of weeks.
Tents, tarps, and building supplies to aid in providing temporary shelters for those whose homes were destroyed so they are shielded from the elements.

With about 30,000 families left homeless by this earthquake, the need for shelter is urgent. We created a “How to Build with Tarps” document in English and in Creole. We are working on getting these materials donated and shipped to Haiti.

An emergency cash grant was awarded to Youth Without Borders (Institut Edeline), which is to be used to provide emergency food relief for families and individuals directly impacted by the earthquake and subsequent depression.
