Benoni was picked up by an officer after he was found abandoned in a cane field. His eyes were sunken in, he was hairless and emaciated, and he had a high fever. The next morning Benoni was unresponsive, cold and very close to death. The shelter staff pulled him inside with heating pads, blankets and a space heater to warm him. They then administered fluids and nutrical to help get his glucose up and dehydration under control. For hours his temperature was too low to read on the thermometer. One staff member was ready to call it because Ben was looking so bad. But Ben was a fighter and he wasn’t ready to give up yet.
