One out of every three bites of food we eat globally is because of pollinators like the honeybee. Bees—along with bats and butterflies—are a vital part of our planet’s ecosystems. If we didn’t have bees, we’d lose many of our food sources.
Today, there is a mounting crisis hitting honey bees with huge consequences near and far. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, commercial beekeepers across the United States discovered earlier this year that their colonies of honey bees are in near or total collapse. The apiary industry is calling this the worst bee die-off in U.S. history.
The crisis in the U.S. is only part of the story. Bees thrive in ecosystems across the world—from Europe’s ancient forests to Africa’s vast deserts, and as far north as the Arctic Circle. Yet natural disasters, lack of food sources, and diseases are threatening their lives. Not only that, but according to the United Nations, the extinction rates of bees are 100 to 1,000 times higher due to human impact.
