Without bats, our world would be significantly different. More than 1,300 bat species across the globe pollinate and fertilize crops, and consume vast amounts of harmful insects. Bats are an important part of our ecosystem and we couldn't live without them.
However, 77 bat species are currently endangered or critically endangered. Bat species lose habitat to development projects, tourism, and mining. In North America, bats are threatened by white-nose syndrome, a disease that has killed millions.
