Devastating "Unsurvivable" Storm Makes Landfall

Hurricane Helene ranks among the largest storms in the Gulf of Mexico over the past century and has made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph, and an "unsurvivable" storm surge of up to 20 feet. Currently, more than 2 million people are without power and the National Weather Service issued a rare “extreme wind warning.” The once-in-a-generation storm will impact the entire region, with life-threatening winds, rain, flooding, and power outages. 

Greater Good Charities has been on the ground for several days, mobilizing preparedness efforts and setting up infrastructure for our immediate response. Truckloads of urgently requested supplies are already en route to support people and pets with food, hygiene, medications, and packs of emergency supplies for displaced families. 

We continue to assess need with government and non-profit partners and will provide immediate aid in the aftermath of the storm.
