After record adoptions and fosters in 2020, shelters are reporting unprecedented overpopulation in 2021.
According to new PetPoint data, cat populations in shelters have returned to pre-2020 levels, and shelter dog populations have surpassed 2019 levels. Driven by a decrease in adoptions, decrease in animal transfer, and increase in length of stay, many shelters all over the country are above capacity. Euthanasia is up 72% since February.
To make matters worse, a surge in COVID-19 cases caused by the omicron variant has left shelters short-staffed, unable to appropriately care for their pets. A new shelter survey conducted by Best Friends now shows 87% of shelters and rescues are facing staffing shortages.
