All people, pets, and the environments that surround them deserve a chance to thrive. But there’s a problem impacting shelter dogs today that prevents them from finding their forever homes: Heartworm disease.
Working with our veterinary experts on the ground, we know that shelters are overcrowded and struggling to care for the most at-risk pets. This is especially bad news for shelter dogs who have tested positive for Heartworm disease. Dogs like Panda.
Panda is a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd Mix from Alabama. She came to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center after her owner could no longer afford to support her and her four puppies. The shelter also discovered that Panda was asymptomatic, heartworm positive.
While her puppies had a good chance of being adopted, Panda’s chances were slim. Although this disease is treatable, the length of care, space required, and cost of treatment can often put dogs with Heartworm disease at a higher risk of euthanasia.
But on April 29, Panda’s life is about to change for good.
In honor of 4 years running our Save a Heart initiative in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim, we’re flying more than 75 pets from overcrowded shelters in Louisiana to the East Coast where they’ll have the best chance at a better life. Panda is one of them.
Save a Heart is a program that conducts life-saving airlifts and ground transport for at-risk pet populations with a heavy focus on asymptomatic heartworm-positive shelter dogs. These flights are staffed with seasoned animal welfare professionals who adhere to best practices in pet transport.
Once they arrive at their destination shelter, dogs like Panda are placed into foster or adoptive homes to complete heartworm treatment and monitoring until they test negative.
But we need your help.
Your donation of just $40 can cover the cost of flying a pet to safety —helping these pets get a second chance at the healthy life and loving home they deserve.
Will you join our crew and Boehringer Ingelheim to help fly dogs like Panda to safety?
