Shelters nationwide are overwhelmed as adoption rates, particularly for dogs, are stagnant and surrender rates remain high.
Staff and volunteers are trying their best to care for these pets, but despite their efforts, they do not have the resources and space to provide for everyone — especially dogs with heartworm.
That is why Greater Good Charities’ Good Flights program continues to partner with organizations nationwide to transport pets from overcrowded shelters to other areas with higher adoption rates.
Additionally, through our Save a Heart initiative, asymptomatic heartworm-positive dogs can receive critical treatment so they can live their best and healthiest lives.
Libby was an asymptomatic heartworm-positive dog that started receiving treatment through our Save a Heart initiative. After being pre-treated at her shelter in Louisiana, she was cleared for transport and boarded a Good Flight to her new home.
Shortly after Libby arrived at her new shelter, Jess and her family came to find a dog to adopt. After touring the facility and meeting several dogs, they were immediately smitten with Libby, who was calm and gentle, even at the first meeting.
They met with a counselor to discuss the details of how heartworm treatment would continue after Libby was taken home. According to Jess, completing her treatment was simple, and Libby was cleared of heartworm in October.
“As soon as we got her in our home, it was love and pets. She adapted instantly. She has been a complete love. Everyone says she is just a love.”

Save a Heart is a lifesaving Greater Good Charities initiative that helps thousands of at-risk dogs just like Libby survive heartworm disease and find a new home.
"It is truly amazing to know that in three years, Save a Heart, a lifesaving initiative of our Good Flights program, has provided thousands of at-risk shelter dogs in the south with a second chance and a new home where they can flourish," said Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities. "Our work with Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of NexGard® PLUS chews and HEARTGARD® Plus, is a testament that with the right care and treatment, this disease does not have to result in tragedy for these pets."
Thanks to the generous support of our partner, Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of NexGard® PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel chewable tablets) and HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel), we provide heartworm-positive dogs with critical veterinary care, heartworm disease prevention, and transportation to relocate them from crowded shelters to loving arms.
