Savy’s Story: How Treatment & Transport Save Shelter Dogs

Written by GGC | Feb 2 2026

It’s still dark on the New Orleans tarmac as 137 shelter pets are loaded onto the plane. Dedicated shelter staff watch it rise into the morning sky, carrying the animals they’ve cared for toward New Jersey and brighter futures.

On board this August flight is one little dog named Savy. Three years old and asymptomatic heartworm-positive, she may not know it yet, but she’s on her way to better health and a loving home.

The plane lands safely in Morristown, and new friendly faces carry Savy’s crate to the shelter van. Soon, she’s settling into her temporary new home and getting used to the spaces and people she’ll find familiar for the next few months.

By the end of the year, sweet Savy has received all her heartworm treatments and is officially free of disease!

Her new family wastes no time bringing her home, and they report that she’s doing great. She loves to snuggle (and lick) everyone and cheer on her people at soccer and softball games as an unofficial mascot. The players and their families all love her enthusiastic sideline support!

Savy's second chance was created by Greater Good Charities’ “Save a Heart” initiative, generously sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of NexGard® PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel chewable tablets) and HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel).

This initiative combines treatment with transport, moving asymptomatic heartworm-positive dogs like Savy out of overburdened shelters in the South to those with more space and resources. We also provide critical heartworm medications to combat this fatal but entirely treatable and preventable disease.

This means fewer lives lost to heartworm and more families brought together through adoption!

Thanks to your support, we’ve already transported nearly 1,750 dogs like Savy to safety and second chances through “Save a Heart.” Together, we’ll keep creating pathways to safety for animals and meaningful support for the people and communities who stand with them. Take flight with us in 2026 and join the mission!
