Greece Wildfires

helping pets & wildlife escape the flames

A state of alert has been issued in Greece as dangerous wildfires persist, putting countless animals at risk of becoming trapped, burned or lost in the chaos.

These deadly wildfires plague the region every summer when the area is hot and dry. This year, experts warn the danger has increased due to a warm winter that left vegetation dry and more susceptible to flame. There were more than 1,200 forest fires in Greece this year in June alone.

Greater Good Charities has partnered with various animal welfare and disaster relief organizations in Greece to provide essential support and resources to animals in need. Together, we are working tirelessly to rescue burned and injured animals from the flames and prepare for future disasters.

relief & recovery

Greater Good Charities addresses disaster relief in three distinct ways.

  • Preparation: We prepare for natural disasters by establishing disaster caches in at-risk areas. This enables the rapid availability of supplies within days.
  • Immediate Response: We work with partners to deliver food and supplies to people and pets, support food banks and animal shelters, and transport shelter pets and wildlife to safety.
  • Ongoing Support: We provide assistance to individuals and pets, participate in the rebuilding of infrastructure, ensure a continuous supply of supplies, and offer grants for specific and unforeseen needs.

GREECE

As hot summer temperatures contribute to dry conditions, Greece is already seeing wildfires break out throughout the country. As it did in the summer of 2023, Greater Good Charities has responded by providing supplies, food for people and animals, medicine, and pet transport.

Turkey-1

TURKEY

In February 2023, Turkey was hit by a series of earthquakes ranging from 5.5 to 7.8, causing buildings to collapse and a death toll of 50,000. Greater Good Charities, with the help of 70 volunteers, provided more than 250,000 meals to earthquake victims and their pets.
