Greater Good Charities Response in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

Greater Good Charities is on the ground in Florida and North Carolina, working with local agencies to assess need across the Southeast, and mobilizing aid for people and pets in devastated communities.

The Greater Good Charities team was on the ground in Florida in advance of Helene's landfall, meeting with partners and preparing supplies for quick response in the storm's aftermath.

Now, we are responding on multiple fronts across the Southeast, where our partners and local governments are working around the clock to manage the ever-increasing needs in their communities.

Hygiene Kits - This morning, the Greater Good Charities Field Operations team in Florida picked up the 5,000 hygiene kits donated by our partners The WASH Foundation at our temporary distribution center in Winter Haven, Fla., and transported them to our local partner, Feeding Tampa Bay, for distribution in Trinity, Fla. to serve a large population of families impacted by the storm.

Supporting Beekeepers - We are working with Mann Lake, the Florida State Beekeepers Association, and others to assess the need and provide temporary food to save bees in the area since Hurricane Helene has wiped out vegetation and hive infrastructure for beekeepers and bees in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and surrounding states. With no forage, millions of the bees that pollinate food crops are at risk of starvation.

Our field team in Florida also purchased much-needed supplies for the beekeepers and headed up to Ocala, Fla. to meet with the Florida State Beekeepers Association for further discussion around helping impacted bees and beekeepers.

Veterinary Care for Injured Pets - We are working to establish pet pharmaceutical donation hubs and identify veterinary needs in impacted communities in multiple states. Wellness care is crucial in the aftermath of a storm when disease spreads more easily to pets due to reasons like contaminated floodwaters and increased wildlife encounters. SPCA Florida, based in Lakeland, Fla. will be one of our pet pharmaceutical hubs.

In addition to pharmaceutical care, we are funding emergency medical aid to rescued pets suffering from broken bones, trauma, dehydration, and other life-threatening injuries.

Distribution of Supplies to Impacted Communities -  Our Field Operations team in Florida expands with the addition of trusted volunteers who will accompany the team throughout the week. The team distributed emergency packs Greater Good Charities sent to Florida in advance of the storm earlier this week.  The packs contain essential supplies for displaced and impacted families and were given out during an event hosted by our local partner, Feeding Tampa Bay. The organization serves 10 surrounding countries experiencing flooding, extreme wind damage and power outages.

Facing Challenges Across the Region Assessing Damage and Need - Greater Good Charities team members across the nation are working throughout the weekend to check in with partners in the Southeast to determine need. The devastation is widespread, with many agencies not yet having a handle on how bad their communities were impacted due to extensive power outages, unreliable communication, downed trees, impassable roads and catastrophic flooding.

Flying Pets to Safety - As communities assess the storm's impact,  there is an urgent need to transport shelter pets out of devastated communities to make room for lost or displaced pets from the storm. Our expert transport team and partners have quickly mobilized a flight from South Carolina to Wisconsin to carry shelter pets to areas with resources to care for them and find forever homes. The flight is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2.

On the Ground Before the Storm - After helping with preparations all day on the Gulf coast, the Greater Good Charities team made its way West to ride out the storm and will be headed early Friday to Tampa to assess needs and solidify a plan based on overnight impact.

Moving Shelter Pets to Safety - Greater Good Charities' team on the ground in Florida pitched in to help Florida SPCA move more than 100 shelter pets that were in the path of the storm out of harm's way. Loading up vans of pets, the emergency, last minute transport undoubtedly saved these shelter pets' lives, making sure they were safe and ready for their new homes.

What does Greater Good Charities consider an emergency?

Greater Good Charities knows that disasters can be short term or long term, natural or human-made. We pride ourselves on being There When It Matters® when disaster strikes. We define disasters as events where people or pets are in crisis and local services aren’t able to fully support the needs of those affected. We only respond to disasters where we have specific requests for a need we can fill.

How does Greater Good Charities prepare for an emergency?

Greater Good Charities’ disaster response team monitors global crises year-round. When we identify a disaster, we reach out to partners on the ground, including our thousands of partners around the globe. We maintain a disaster fund and caches of product around the U.S., which allows for us to provide immediate relief in the form of cash and product grants when possible. In the case of natural disasters, our programs are sometimes activated in advance to do things like fly pets out of harm’s way or move humanitarian and animal welfare supplies in. When we respond to disaster, we take into account the longevity of the event, and make sure we reserve resources when needed.

Why does Greater Good Charities prefer cash over in-kind donations?

Cash donations are the most efficient way for organizations like Greater Good Charities to provide assistance to people and animals in need during emergency situations.
