Report From Iowa: Disaster Relief Team Assists Pets and People During Flooding

Torrential rainfall has inundated parts of Iowa, with some locations receiving up to 18 inches of rain, resulting in catastrophic floods.

As the flooding breached levees and people were evacuated and rescued, many pets were trapped in homes and unable to escape the rising waters.

Greater Good Charities’ Disaster Relief Team has been on the ground, working tirelessly with the People for Pets Shelter Humane Society of North Iowa to rescue these stranded pets. Our team is also rushing pet food and essential supplies to those affected.

Our Action on the Ground

In Spencer, Iowa, the Greater Good Charities team is distributing essential supplies and meeting with leadership at local partners like People for Pets Shelter and the Humane Society of North Iowa to discuss current aid and plan for ongoing recovery efforts.

While on the ground, Greater Good Charities has pledged multiple cash grants to shelters struggling through the flooding and is committed to continuing our support with essential supplies and food through disaster recovery.

As our team delivered aid, they helped rescue a cat and a dog that had been left alone in their home within the evacuation zone. The pets, scared, hungry, and dehydrated, were safely transported to the shelter and reunited with their family.

Due to the quick and severe flooding, many residents were forced to leave their pets behind,” said Greater Good Charities Vice President of Field Operations Laura Littlebear. Fortunately, our partners rapidly responded to help bring them to safety. It is difficult to describe the horrific damage the flooding caused. Everyone’s belongings are in their yards as water is pumped out of homes. The recovery effort is just beginning, and there is a long road ahead.”
