Inside the Dangerous Evacuations: Rescuing Families and Pets in Ukraine

As the conflict intensifies in Ukraine, families are making desperate attempts to evacuate. The ongoing violence has forced many to leave their homes, often with only the essentials, including their beloved pets. In response to this crisis, Greater Good Charities has joined forces with United for Animals to aid in the safe evacuation of these families and their animals.

Evacuating Families and Pets

Despite the inherent risks and logistical challenges, United for Animals' founding partners, Denys Khrystov and Leonid Nomerchuk, have dedicated themselves to rescuing both people and animals from the heart of the conflict zone. Gaining entry into the affected areas is no small feat, requiring special permits and a willingness to brave dangerous conditions. Yet, Denys and Leonid continue to risk their lives on these perilous missions, ensuring that dozens of Ukrainians, along with their pets, can reach safety.

For many of those fleeing, their pets are cherished members of their families, and they refuse to leave without them. Denys and Leonid recognize the deep emotional bonds between the evacuees and their pets, and they go to great lengths to ensure that both humans and animals are transported safely. Each journey they undertake is dangerous, where every mile traveled could be their last. Nevertheless, their unwavering heroism and selflessness have given hundreds of people and animals a chance at a safer, more secure future.

Heartbreaking Separation

The devastating impact of the conflict has shattered communities, leaving countless families torn apart. In one village on the front, Mr. Oleksandr was forced to leave his home due to health reasons, but the decision to leave was not easy. His wife chose to stay behind, determined to care for the remaining pets and people in the village who still needed her help. The separation was a heartbreaking ordeal for the couple.

However, Mr. Oleksandr did not leave completely alone. He brought his loyal dog, Kolobok, with him—his steadfast companion during these uncertain times. Kolobok's presence has been a source of comfort for Mr. Oleksandr, reminding him that he is not alone as he navigates this difficult journey.
For many Ukrainians like Mr. Oleksandr, the decision to evacuate means leaving behind everything they've ever known, with no certainty of what the future holds.
