The Aftermath of Greece’s Wildfires: Rapid Response to Crisis

At Greater Good Charities, we believe in providing help wherever it is needed, and as part of our disaster relief mission, we respond to disasters around the globe to provide both immediate aid and help with long-term recovery efforts. One such disaster took place last year in Greece. They faced their worst wildfire of the year, ravaging the Attica region and threatening the capital, Athens. The fast-moving blaze took a devastating toll, claiming lives, destroying thousands of hectares of land, and forcing residents to evacuate. With flames soaring as high as 80 feet, the fire wreaked havoc across the region, leaving behind extensive destruction.

We have been working with our partners in Greece to prepare for wildfire season in advance through grants and by pre-stationing critical supplies. When the wildfire came, that preparation allowed quick action to protect wildlife and pets in crisis. Our disaster team responded to their calls for help immediately, and together, we saved hundreds of animals and pets from the fires.

Rapid Animal Rescue Efforts

At Greater Good Charities, we understand the importance of swift and effective action in times of crisis. When the wildfire broke out, we immediately mobilized our team, collaborating with local partners to initiate large-scale animal rescue operations.

One of the most heartwarming stories from this response involved the rescue of 135 tortoises. These resilient creatures, commonly victims of wildfires, were carefully saved, assessed, and given the medical attention they needed. Each tortoise was numbered, its location recorded, and then transferred to our partner ANIMA’s First Aid Station for further care.

While some animals recovered quickly and were released into the wild once it rained and the ground was appropriately replenished, others required longer-term care at the station. In total, we supported rescuing a wide range of animals, including cats, dogs, deer, sheep, and even peacocks.

Coordinated Relief Efforts

In addition to animal rescue, Greater Good Charities worked closely with local organizations to provide resources for displaced residents. Our relief efforts included distributing emergency supplies and supporting shelters for those affected by the disaster. By partnering with local groups, we ensured timely and effective aid to communities in need.
