Every day, thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty attempt to enter Greece and seek asylum. These families face crossing treacherous seas in small boats and long journeys on foot, often paying traffickers a sum to help them reach safety. Greece has welcomed refugees from Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan who are hoping to start new, safer lives in Europe.
Upon arriving, families are often assigned temporary living at a refugee camp before moving to more permanent residences within Greece's cities or other European countries. Their lives are unpredictable, never knowing how long they will be in one place or when they'll be able to gain permanent housing or jobs.
How is greater Good Charities responding?
The uprooting of lives means the thousands of children living in refugee camps may miss their opportunity for a quality education. Uncertainty about when they'll be able to attend school, combined with a lack of resources such as food and school supplies, means they often choose to stay in the camps. Educational coordinators within in the camps work hard to encourage children to attend school and conduct workshops to help them overcome language barriers.
Greater Good Charities is distributing backpacks filled with school supplies to refugee children so they don't have to miss out on their education. We're also meeting with refugees within camps and other humanitarian partners on the ground to determine what is most needed, from emergency supplies to food and hygiene products.

Greater Good Charities responds to war and disaster in three distinct ways.
- Preparation: Greater Good Charities prepares for conflict and natural disasters by establishing disaster caches in at-risk areas. This enables the rapid availability of supplies within days.
- Immediate Response: During crises, Greater Good Charities works with partners worldwide to deliver food and supplies to people and pets, support food banks and animal shelters, and transport shelter pets and wildlife to safety.
- Ongoing Support: Greater Good Charities provides assistance to individuals and pets, participates in the rebuilding of infrastructure, ensures a continuous supply of supplies, offers grants for specific and unforeseen needs, and stewards bees crucial to agricultural systems.
UKRAINE
Since the Russian invasion began in 2022, Greater Good Charities has been actively providing essential resources to innocent victims of the war in Ukraine. To date, we have distributed over one million meals to people and more than 30 million pet meals for shelters and stray animals.
GREECE
As hot summer temperatures contribute to dry conditions, Greece is already seeing wildfires break out throughout the country. As it did in the summer of 2023, Greater Good Charities has responded by providing supplies, food for people and animals, medicine, and pet transport.
TURKEY
In February 2023, Turkey was hit by a series of earthquakes ranging from 5.5 to 7.8, causing buildings to collapse and a death toll of 50,000. Greater Good Charities, with the help of 70 volunteers, provided more than 250,000 meals to earthquake victims and their pets.
