When Hurricane Francine ripped through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, the 80 mph winds left nearly 300,000 without power and 12 million people faced the risk of severe flooding. Natural disasters like this don’t just impact humans—they also put pets at risk. High-speed winds can tear down fences, leaving many pets lost, scared, and displaced.
In times of crisis, animal shelters become lifelines, taking in and rescuing lost pets until they can be reunited with their families. To make room for the influx of displaced pets, Greater Good Charities launched an emergency transport, evacuating pets that were already in shelters to safer locations in the Northeast and Midwest.
Evacuating Shelter Pets to Safety
In the wake of Hurricane Francine, shelters and rescues found themselves overwhelmed by an influx of lost and displaced pets, while also battling power outages and potential flooding. But thanks to your generous support, Greater Good Charities was able to act quickly by mobilizing an emergency flight to transport at-risk pets to safety.
Over 85 shelter pets were loaded onto a plane, bound for new beginnings in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. By relocating pets who were already in shelters before the storm, we made space for the many pets arriving in the wake of Francine. The transported shelter pets now have a second chance at finding loving homes, while shelters in the storm's path can focus on reuniting new arrivals with their families.
