Greater Good Charities is rushing aid to Central Europe in response to Storm Boris, which has brought some of the worst flooding in decades to Central Europe. Countries such as Poland, Czechia, Romania, and Austria are experiencing widespread damage, with relentless rainfall causing rivers to overflow, dams to collapse, and thousands forced to evacuate. The region has been left grappling with power outages, impassable roads, and severely damaged infrastructure.

Record Rainfall and Catastrophic Damage

Storm Boris unleashed record levels of rainfall across Central Europe, a disaster exacerbated by climate change. In Poland alone, some areas saw nearly six months' worth of rain in just a few days. Towns like Kłodzko and Nysa were particularly hard hit, with rivers breaching flood barriers, while in Glucholazy, bridges collapsed under the weight of surging waters.

The flooding has also impacted Czechia, where cities like Prague erected emergency flood barriers in anticipation of rising river levels. The storm's devastation spread across borders, with northern Romania facing destruction as homes were swept away by torrents of water.

Rising Death Toll and Economic Fallout

As the waters continue to rise, the human toll of this disaster is also growing. The death toll has reached at least 24, with fears that more lives may be lost as the floodwaters spread. In Romania's Galati county alone, four people have died, and around 5,000 homes were severely damaged. Thousands of people across Central Europe have been displaced, with damage estimates expected to reach billions of euros.

Countries like Poland have declared states of natural disaster, prompting the European Union to mobilize emergency resources.
