Emergency Relief in Action: Standing with Myanmar After the Earthquake

When a powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, it caused widespread loss and disruption—cutting off communities from food, medicine, and critical resources. Greater Good Charities responded quickly, helping fund the deployment of 20 emergency medical teams to reach the hardest-hit areas with medical equipment, fuel, and first aid supplies.

To help meet urgent food needs, we supported the distribution of survival bags—each containing two weeks’ worth of staple items like rice, dried vegetables, cooking oil, and condiments. This effort provided immediate relief to more than 10,000 people.

The Crisis in Myanmar

On March 28, a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked central Myanmar, killing over 3,500 people, injuring 5,000, and leaving at least 160 missing. Over 17.2 million people live in regions affected by the quake and are in urgent need of food, clean water, medical care, emergency shelter, and cash assistance.

Two of the hardest-hit areas—Mandalay and Sagaing—suffered widespread destruction, leaving families struggling to survive amid collapsed homes, shattered roads, and devastated food systems.

Greater Good Charities’ Response

In the immediate aftermath, Greater Good Charities partnered with local responders to fund 20 emergency medical teams, ensuring the delivery of critical supplies across the most devastated areas.

Thanks to funding and support of the Greater Good Charities community, local responders reached thousands of people with survival essentials packages when and where they needed it most. Each package provided two weeks of food for a household, offering families both physical sustenance and a renewed sense of stability.

Looking Ahead

For communities upended by crisis and out of reach of relief, access to two weeks of food stability or medical teams is a lifeline that transcends the critical physical relief - it's reassurance they are not alone and a reminder of human resilience.

This effort also strengthened our partners’ capacity to respond in future disasters, laying the foundation for more coordinated, community-based resilience work. The crisis brought international attention to the long-term humanitarian needs in Myanmar—needs that are ongoing.
