Help Get Books into the Hands of Children in Need

Recently, an inspiring story went viral regarding a 12-year-old boy named Mathew Flores asking his mail carrier for extra junk mail to read. The boy explained that he did not have any books and that his family could not afford transportation to the library. He was eager to read anything. Thanks to the kindness of the mail carrier and his post on social media, that young boy has since received hundreds of books.

Unfortunately, this Mathew Flores’ situation is actually quite common throughout the United States. According to First Book, a non-profit organization that provides access to new books for children in need, more than 32 million children live in low-income households. Many of these households do not have age-appropriate books available for the kids. In fact, in some areas of the country there is only one book available for every 300 children!

Studies have confirmed that the number of books in a home directly predicts reading achievement. With literacy being one of the best predictors of a child’s future success, it is absolutely essential that we get books into the hands of these children.
