Myanmar: Why the Need Exists
As we at Greater Good Charities honor 10 years of partnership with the Mae Tao Clinic, we celebrate the people and communities that are bringing solutions to these crises with dignity and compassion, regardless of border or nationality.
In the Thai town of Mae Sot—ten minutes from the Myanmar border—the Mae Tao Clinic has been offering long-term solutions to local access of healthcare, education, job-training, and food programs.
This region is home to a large population of migrants and refugees—many of whom do not have reliable access to healthcare.
Of the migrant and refugee communities that have come to Thailand in recent years, many are crossing the border from Myanmar.
Home to over 55 million people, Myanmar was devastated by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the nation in April of 2025.
The disaster killed more than 3,500 people, injured thousands more, and destroyed several hospitals.
Greater Good Charities and the Mae Tao Clinic responded—working to provide emergency medical services, supplies, fuel, and on-the-ground healthcare workers assisting those in need.
Today, Myanmar is still grappling with the efforts to rebuild from disaster caused by the earthquake and severe monsoon flooding, as well as, the ongoing conflict.
“The suffering is very deep...and the people of Myanmar deserve to be heard and seen.” – Gwyn Lewis, UN Interim Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar

According to the UN's 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, they are estimating that more than 16 million people (including 5 million children) will require life-saving assistance and protection. With many residents taking refuge in Thailand and surrounding locations, the international displacement crisis is deepening.
“The scale, the severity and the complexity of the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar is very, very high,” she said. And the additional complexities of access challenges and funding shortages means that many are left without being able to receive the aid they need.
As the people of Myanmar work tirelessly toward a better future, our partners at the Mae Tao Clinic are providing needed healthcare, life-changing education, and basic needs—setting a standard within a region where it is deeply needed.

These solutions can go beyond immediate needs like healthcare.
Understanding the importance of continued education, Greater Good Charities has helped Mae Tao Clinic deliver hundreds of thousands of meals to children attending schools across the region—in Burma and Thailand.
As we recognize the efforts and support of our partners at the Mae Tao Clinic—and the strength and resilience of the people of Myanmar—we are grateful for the continued donor support that makes these programs possible.
Together, we can continue to show up for communities in need, wherever they are.
