Emergency Support for Bees After Hurricanes Helene and Milton
Beekeepers and Bees Face Unprecedented Losses
The devastation from Hurricanes Helene and Milton left a significant impact on bees and beekeepers across the Southeast. The storms wiped out critical forage and destroyed countless hives, leaving millions of bees facing starvation. Without immediate support, the loss of these vital pollinators could affect not only local ecosystems but also our broader food supply.
Greater Good Charities’ Response: Providing Life-Sustaining Aid
In response, Greater Good Charities' disaster team has been working closely with beekeepers in the affected areas, from small operations to large farms, providing emergency resources to help sustain their bee populations. Partnering with Cargill and Mann Lake, we are hosting feeding events across Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, donating thousands of gallons of syrup, bee pollen substitute, and sugar to nourish billions of bees while they await the return of natural forage.
The Crucial Role of Bees in Our Food System
Did you know that one out of every three bites of food in the United States relies on honeybees and other pollinators? Bees alone are responsible for pollinating $15 billion worth of crops each year, from almonds to apples. Protecting these pollinators protects our food system, ensuring that fruits, vegetables, and countless other crops continue to thrive.
