Empowering Girls In STEM with 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures
At Greater Good Charities, we believe in amplifying potential. In response to the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched the Girls’ Voices Movement—a global online platform that offers girls and young women (ages 13 to 21) a safe, creative space to connect, collaborate, and develop storytelling skills through documentary filmmaking and photography.
This digital community is led by professional filmmakers and Girls’ Voices alumni, creating a supportive environment where young creators can shape and share powerful messages for social change. These projects are not only personal stories—they are catalysts for action in communities worldwide.
Creating Space for Girls in STEM: A Collaboration with 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures
We recently collaborated with the New York Academy of Sciences’ 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures Program to highlight the power and presence of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures uses a digital platform to allow girls to receive mentorship from female STEM experts, while also gaining access to college readiness and leadership coursework, as well as network with other girls passionate about STEM from all over the world. Take a look at this quick video to get to see what this dynamic collaboration looked like:
Worldwide trends indicate that STEM occupations are expected to experience rapid growth in the coming decade, with technology and engineering being among the top sought-after skills in the United States. However, a gender gap in STEM persists around the world.
Women only account for about 29% of the global STEM workforce (UNESCO, 2019), often leading them to experience isolation, believed to be caused by a lack of access to women peers, role models, and mentors (catalyst.org)

Our partnership with 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures amplified the brilliant voices and minds of young women and girls in STEM from around the world, while simultaneously building a network of peers and mentors that they can turn to for the rest of their lives as they develop their careers.
When asked to “think about what it means to be a woman in STEM in today’s world and create a video that demonstrates the power, perseverance, and presence of women in scientific fields,” Girls’ Voices received incredibly powerful, inspiring video projects, all of which are available to watch on our YouTube channel here!
At our recent virtual screening and celebration, Rowena Kuo from 1000 Girls, 1000 Voices announced that Mahika’s video project was selected by the New York Academy of Sciences to be featured at the 2021 Global STEM Alliance Summit.
