How pets help Domestic violence Survivors
For those who have suffered abuse at the hands of a spouse or partner, the unconditional love of a pet can be a necessary source of comfort and healing. When all hope seems lost, pets can give survivors purpose, a sense of security and familiarity, and companionship.
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond, Greater Good Charities is committed to helping keep survivors and their pets together.
Pets Provide Emotional Support and Companionship
When a survivor feels lonely or isolated, a dog or cat can be more than a pet – they can be a friend in times of trouble. A loving pet can reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety by being a constant source of affection in a survivor’s life. A survivor may also feel more comfortable around their cats and dogs because they don’t have to fear judgment. They know their pet’s love is unconditional.
Caring for A Pet Can Help Survivors Reestablish Routine
Those who have suffered domestic violence often struggle with their mental health long after they’ve escaped the violence. When facing trauma and depression, it can be difficult to find the motivation to complete everyday tasks. The act of taking a dog out for a walk or refilling a cat’s water food and water bowls may seem small, but it can be a larger step forward in reestablishing normalcy.
How Greater Good Charities is Helping Keep Survivors & Pets Together
Unfortunately, most domestic violence shelters are simply not equipped to take in pets. In fact, only 19% of domestic violence shelters allow cats or dogs. Survivors are faced with a horrible choice: flee to safety and abandon their beloved companion or stay together and remain in danger.
In a traumatic situation, survivors may form incredibly tight bonds with their pets, making it difficult for them to leave the situation if they believe their pets are in danger. Studies show that 50% of survivors will delay leaving their abuser to stay with their pet.
Greater Good Charities reimagines shelters for survivors of domestic abuse, renovating and transforming domestic violence shelters to provide safe, inviting places for survivors and their pets.
