What Does Long-Term Commitment to Disaster Recovery Look Like?

When disaster strikes, the immediate response grabs the spotlight, but long-term recovery is a slow and often overlooked process. At Greater Good Charities, we are committed to staying involved long after media coverage fades. We understand that the road to recovery is lengthy and challenging. That's why we focus on rebuilding communities, providing ongoing relief, and supporting those who need it most.

Since 2017, Greater Good Charities has provided over $96 million in disaster response support. Our approach to disaster relief focuses on three key strategies:

  • Preparation: Anticipating and preparing communities for impending natural disasters.
  • Response: Offering immediate help during a disaster by providing essential supplies and relief work.
  • Recovery: Strengthening recovery efforts by assisting people and pets, while reinforcing local partners with continuous support and services.

Disaster Relief Efforts in Action

LA Wildfires

In response to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, Greater Good Charities mobilized pre-staged supplies from our California warehouse within two hours of the initial outbreak. Our field operations team swiftly deployed, delivering over 1 million pounds of aid—more than $5.8 million in value—including 4.8 million meals for pets in need, humanitarian supplies, hygiene kits, and first aid items.

The need continues to grow, and we remain committed to long-term recovery efforts. Our ongoing support includes preparing medical aid for pets and wildlife suffering from burns and trauma, transporting adoptable pets to shelters, and collaborating with local communities to provide essential supplies during recovery.

Hurricanes Helene and Milton

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Greater Good Charities led an extensive relief effort across the Southeast United States. We dispatched 140 trucks filled with food, water, hygiene products, pet supplies, and more, delivering over $8.7 million worth of aid to 50 communities, including small, hard-to-reach areas. Our collaboration with over 20 national and local partners allows us to maximize the impact of this critical aid, ensuring that affected communities receive the support they need.

 Maui Wildfires

In early August of 2023, wildfires raged through Maui, prompting evacuations, and causing widespread damage and loss. Thanks to our long-term partnership with the Maui Humane Society and generous donors and partners, Greater Good Charities was able to respond quickly to the disaster and we continue to provide aid through the recovery today.

“It was devastating for everybody, not only did we lose a community, we also lost a historic town that was so crucial to our Hawaiian history.”

As Maui continues to rebuild and recover, we are continuing to work with Maui Humane Society and other partners on the ground to deliver essential aid packs and supplies, and help transport shelter pets to help improve their chance for a forever home. The journey ahead may be long, but with continued collaboration and generosity, there is hope for a brighter future for all those affected by the wildfires.

Greater Good Charities' Global Impact: Ukraine

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has created a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people and animals in need. Since the war began in 2022, Greater Good Charities has been working on the ground in Ukraine to deliver critical aid. Our efforts include providing over 31.6 million pet meals and 11 million meals to displaced people through local food banks and direct distributions. These efforts are part of a larger relief initiative, which also provides blankets, hygiene supplies, and essential pet food.
